WEEK EIGHTEEN: CRUCIFIXION AND DEATH DAY 2 - Holy Thursday
MORNING FACE TO FACE WITH GOD:
Begin with Prayer to the Holy Spirit
Prayer on Luke 23: 39-43: The Repentant Criminal: "Now one of the criminals hanging there reviled Jesus, saying, "Are you not the Messiah? Save yourself and us." The other, however, rebuking him, said in reply, "Have you no fear of God, for you are subject to the same condemnation? And indeed, we have been condemned justly, for the sentence we received corresponds to our crimes, but this man has done nothing criminal." Then he said, "Jesus, remember me when you come into your kingdom." He replied to him, "Amen, I say to you, today you will be with me in Paradise."
Read the Reflections; then pray using Luke 23: 39-43; ask for sorrow with Christ in sorrow, anguish with Christ in anguish, tears and deep grief because of the great affliction Christ endures for me (#203).
1. We have been condemned justly: True conversion can only begin when there is honest and sincere acknowledgment of one's sins. By being in Jesus' company during his last hours, the criminal had experienced sincere repentance and acknowledged his heinous crime that deserved capital punishment.
2. Jesus, remember me when you come into your kingdom: The grace of repentance, given to him by Jesus, led to his earnest plea to be with Jesus always. He realized that his salvation could only come from being with Jesus.
3. Amen, I say to you, today you will be with me in Paradise: Jesus offers him the full benefits of his redemptive act of salvation on the cross. He tells the criminal that they would be together in Paradise. We go through a similar process in the sacrament of reconciliation.
Holy Thursday "Then he took the bread, said the blessing, broke it, and gave it to them, saying, "This is my body, which will be given for you; do this in memory of me."" Luke 22:19. In today's verses, three men hang on a cross, two justly punished, one unjustly punished, two accepting their fate, one giving voice to the devil. This is our journey in life, to get to the point that we accept what happens as part of God's will. Our decisions have consequences and we will be justly punished, the challenge as I see it is getting to the place where Jesus as Son of Man is, accepting the unjust punishment for the glory of God. "he humbled himself, becoming obedient to death, even death on a cross." Philippians 2:8
What is God saying to you? Empty yourself of all undue burdens.
Dear Lord God, the glory of Your Son rising is days away and we await His triumphant return so we can receive our just reward. As the thief on the cross, I Pray I am like the good thief, willing accepting my fate without the fight against You in me. Prayers for our world Lord that gives voice to the devil, may we remember this today, I ask this in Jesus name, Amen.
