Daily Thoughts - Memorial of Our Lady of Sorrows.
"Standing by the cross of Jesus were his mother and his mother's sister, Mary the wife of Clopas, and Mary of Magdala. When Jesus saw his mother and the disciple there whom he loved, he said to his mother, "Woman, behold, your son." Then he said to the disciple, "Behold, your mother." And from that hour the disciple took her into his home." John 19:25-27
A mothers instincts are to protect their children, to watch out for them and care for them. Mary watches as her son, the Son of God, gets crucified and hangs on a cross. The death she feels isn't expressed in actions other than her deep sorrow for what He endures and the deep love she has for God knowing that this must be the way.
We can look at religion as a set of dogmatic rules that we must follow, a list of traditions that makes no sense if one has not experienced its joys and its sufferings. Let's not forget that what is written in scripture are the lives of the Body of Christ. Real people that have gone before us and have experienced the pains and joys of life. Mary walks with us as we journey thru the desert.
Dear Father, I see the anguish on her face, I see the pain in knowing that this is the only way her son must die. His pain is her pain as well. Father, there are many experiencing pain today, the pain of a lost loved one, give them the hope that Mary had as she also knew You are God. Nothing happens that You do not allow and there is purpose in all of it even if we do not understand. Give us the love that Mary has for You and Your Holy Family. Amen.
Mary, Our Lady of Sorrows, walk with us.
Saint Joesph, Protect us.
Greater is He that is in me than he that is in the world. 1 John 4:4b
