MORNING FACE TO FACE WITH GOD:
Begin with Prayer to the Holy Spirit
Prayer on Luke 2: 27-32; 34-35: Simeon's Prophecy:
"He (Simeon) came in the Spirit into the temple; and when the parents brought in the child Jesus to perform the custom of the law in regard to him, he took him into his arms and blessed God, saying: "Now, Master, you may let your servant go in peace, according to your word, for my eyes have seen your salvation, which you prepared in sight of all the peoples, a light for revelation to the Gentiles, and glory for your people Israel... Behold this child is destined for the fall and rise of many in Israel, and to be a sign that will be contradicted (and you yourself a sword will pierce) so that the thoughts of many hearts may be revealed."
Read the Reflection; then pray using Luke 2: 27-35; ask for an intimate knowledge of our Lord, who has become man for me, that I may love Him more and follow Him more closely (#104)
Simeon, a holy man and prophet longing for the Messiah, was led by the Holy Spirit to meet Mary and Joseph during the presentation of their child. He took the child Jesus into his arms and proclaimed his canticle, which is one of the three great canticles of the New Testament, the other two being those of Zechariah and Mary. Simeon is touched by the Holy Spirit; there is peace in his heart and he is ready to die: "now, Master, you may let your servant go in peace." Then Simeon highlights some significant aspects about the child. Jesus will be the Savior, both of his people Israel, and of the whole world: "a light for revelation to the Gentiles, and glory for your people Israel." Simeon is reiterating the prophecy made in the second Suffering Servant Oracle: "It is too little, he says, for you to be my servant, to raise up the tribes of Jacob, and restore the survivors of Israel; I will make you a light to the nations, that my salvation may reach to the ends of the earth" (Isaiah 49: 6). Another aspect of Jesus' mission is that "this child is destined for the fall and rise of many in Israel." Throughout the gospels, we are told again and again, that the Scribes and Pharisees were opposed to Jesus, and that many came to believe in him. Finally, Simeon tells Mary that within this tension of opposition and acceptance (fall and rise), Jesus will be a sign of contradiction, and she herself will share in that contradiction: "and you yourself a sword will pierce." I see Simeon and his committed relationship with God the Father. They spoke often and this relationship is a real relationship. God has affirmed many things in Simeon's life to the point that they are trusted friends. Simeon trusted in God to fulfill His promise, a Covenant relationship on both parties, for Simeon was patiently waiting. My take away today is daily prayer, the importance of our daily conversations with God. He will paint the scene, Mary and Joesph excited parents coming to the temple, the tradition that they had been brought up with. Simeon seeing them and recognizing the Divinity of Christ for his heart told him so. The peace that he had so longed for has arrived. Our world today needs peace, as we wait patiently, let's take Simeon's lead and speak with God, His words for me this morning are below.
What is God saying to you? I have prepared the way, Simeon sat and waited on the coming Christ. Our daily conversations and time together prepared him for this day. As Mary and Joesph, walked towards him, his heart exploded with Joy. He seen the coming of the Lord and was ready. His example of daily prayer is a witness to My faithfulness to My Word, the Truth.
