"As Jesus passed on from there, he saw a man named Matthew sitting at the customs post. He said to him, "Follow me." And he got up and followed him." Matthew 9:9
Close your eyes and picture Matthew sitting at his post to collect the taxes. He has been well trained to deal with others. He is good at his job because he gets others to give what they don't want. He spends many hours toiling to collect the taxes. He is well rewarded for his efforts both at work and where he lives. Then Jesus comes walking past and asks him to "follow me".
How would that event look like today? Would there be office cubicles, a sales counter, a desk, a steering wheel, an airplane seat, a computer screen, maybe tables in front of Matthew? Look around you, what do you see at your job. Jesus still asks the same thing, "follow me". What is your answer? Will you be like Saint Matthew and say yes or will you put your head back down, continue the grind and say no? Matthew had the same decision to make but He realized that Jesus was real and God was greater.
Dear Father God, it has been a challenging week and You know what stirs my heart. May we each see what we do each day is either a job or a calling given by You. Bless us with right choices, comfort us in our challenges. May we see You in our daily lives, may we put the same or more energy into our relationship with You than the post that we sit at. Prayers for a friend that has yet to meet You, may You walk by and ask the same question You asked of Matthew. May the love of Christ be in our hearts all the days of our lives. Amen.
Mary, Queen of Lost Souls, pray for us.
Please share this with all the tax collectors that are over worked and under appreciated for their efforts. Jesus is still passing by in all of our lives. Are we following?
Greater is He that is in me than he that is in the world. 1 John 4:4b
