Daily Thoughts 8-26-2017 Matthew 23:9

"Call no one on earth your father; you have but one Father in heaven." Matthew‬ ‭23:9‬

We all have an earthly father, God does not forbid us to call them father.  Does God not tell us to honor our father and mother.

The apostle Paul tells us: "I am writing you this not to shame you, but to admonish you as my beloved children. Even if you should have countless guides to Christ, yet you do not have many fathers, for I became your father in Christ Jesus through the gospel." ‭‭1 Corinthians‬ ‭4:14-15‬.  He calls himself a father to those God has placed under his care.   But he defers all authority to his Father in Heaven.   He is a teacher and an apostle of Christ given the authority to preach the word of God.  This wasn't a role he choose himself, Jesus gave him this authority by the power of the Holy Spirit.

There is no duplicity in God or in God's word, so what is Jesus telling us.   I believe he is telling us to guard against those who claim the authority to be theirs.  To those that place themselves in places of honor and do not defer to God.  They have cultic followings and unfortunately there are those that fall victim to their ungodly schemes.

Dear Heavenly Father, I thank You for those that You have called to be preachers of Your word, to those who humble themselves and serve Your children.  I am thankful for the priests that speak truth to us and are blessed with Your graces to teach.  May we offer up prayers for those ordained to the priesthood, who deny themselves and do the will of God.  Thank You for keeping us safe.   I ask this in Jesus name, amen.

Mary, Our Lady of Victory, pray for us.
