Week 11 - The Journey Day 6
"When you give alms, do not blow a trumpet before you, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets to win the praise of others. Amen, I say to you, they have received their reward." Matthew 6:2
"When you give alms, do not blow a trumpet before you, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets to win the praise of others. Amen, I say to you, they have received their reward." Matthew 6:2
Jesus contrast two types of people, those who want recognized by others and those recognized by God. They both get what they desire except ones reward isn't received from God. Jesus challenges the teachers of His day who stand against God holding themselves up as examples. They want recognition, they want reward now, they feed themselves with their good deeds.
Jesus goes on to tell us: "But when you give alms, do not let your left hand know what your right is doing, so that your almsgiving may be secret. And your Father who sees in secret will repay you." Matthew 6:3-4. God sees all and nothing goes beyond His sight. Our treasure is not here, it is in Heaven and our works of mercy should be done for God and not mammon.
What is God saying to me? Give of yourself and do not count the reward, I see all especially the heart.
Dear Lord God, You know the depths of our love and You know if it serves Your glory or our own selfish desires. You know our nature Lord and it's weaknesses, give us strength to overcome our own needs. Give us a love greater than all our needs that goes beyond self. May we see others as You see them and may we give as You freely give. Bless this week Father, thank You for the blessings of this past week, You are mighty God who hears the cry of the poor. I ask this in Jesus name, Amen.
