"In the course of time Cain brought an offering to the LORD from the fruit of the ground, while Abel, for his part, brought the fatty portion of the firstlings of his flock. The LORD looked with favor on Abel and his offering, but on Cain and his offering he did not look with favor. So Cain was very angry and dejected." Genesis 4:3-5
Does God withhold the fatty portions from us? NO! He does make us work for it but He does not withhold, we do. You can see the hearts of both Cain and Abel in these verses. Abel brings God the best of the best, He does not withhold from his Creator. Cain on the other hand withholds his best fruit, this he saves for himself. We do not know how things grow, what makes one produce more than the other but none of it grows without the help of God. Do not withhold from God, if we do, God will withhold His favor from us. "Every good thing given and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights, with whom there is no variation or shifting shadow." James 1:17 God makes it all grow.
What is God saying to me: I see your heart, I see the need, I have more to give but you must continue on your journey. Live in my peace.
Dear Father, if we are not careful we can become like Cain who's focus was self. Protect us from being vain and not trusting in Your magnanimous Spirit. You are the Giver of all good gifts and are seeking to pour them upon hearts that are open to You and which are giving of You. Open us up to the possibilities of a deeper relationship with You and help us see how we withhold your favor. I ask this in the name of Jesus, Amen.
