Daily Thoughts - Make God Known.

1228
Hence Baptism is a bath of water in which the "imperishable seed" of the Word of God produces its life-giving effect.32 St. Augustine says of Baptism: "The word is brought to the material element, and it becomes a sacrament."33

Life.  The One who made us, cares for us, gives us breath in our lungs and knowns our every step.  Our Baptism is the beginning of that relationship where we are given the imperishable seed of everlasting life.  How do we show our love for Him?  Scripture leads us into a deeper relationship, it gives us the message that He desires for us to know.  Water the garden today, listen to His heart beat as You read what He has written for you.

"Behind and before you encircle me and rest your hand upon me."‭‭Psalms‬ ‭139‬:‭5‬.

Dear Father God, You are with me, I see You at work within, fortifying the walls were only love will penetrate.  Help us listen to the readings of the day that shows us the strengths and weaknesses of life situations where we can learn about our own journey.  Soften the hearts of Your faithful Lord to receive the gift of Your word.  Prayers for those living in anxiety, may they come to know that You, the living God, has His hand upon them.  Love Your son.

Daily Thoughts - Make God Known.

Daily Thoughts - Make God Known.

1227 According to the Apostle Paul, the believer enters through Baptism into communion with Christ's death, is buried with him, and rises with him:

Do you not know that all of us who have been baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death? We were buried therefore with him by baptism into death, so that as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, we too might walk in newness of life.29

Newness of life.  Do you look at life differently knowing you have died with Christ, and are raised with Him?  Didn't know baptism was that powerful to be a new creation in Christ?  Spend a little time pondering the newness of life, the joy of learning something new, being open to listening to God speak into Your heart.

In todays Gospel reading Jesus speaks to the Scribes and Pharisees, they lay a heavy burden on their followers.  The focus isn't upon the gift of God but upon themselves.  They are not concerned for the other, they are concerned for themselves, looking for ways to satisfy their hunger.  Jesus rebukes them and speaks of the true gift, the gift that comes from Heaven.  We can find ourselves focusing upon the same thing and not recognizing the gift that God gives us.

Today is a new day, filled with hope and possibilities.  Look at life differently, see the joy that God gives and be thankful in all situations.  Remember you have died with Christ and have been raised with Him, how would He respond if He was in your shoes. P.S.  Greater is He that is in you than he that is in the world.  1 John 4:4b.  He is in your shoes, if you let Him.

Dear Father, I thank you for the gift of this day, for the newness that is brought when we begin together and end together.   Watch over us this day, make us aware of our own reality and continue to call us to follow You.  Thank You Father for the gift of Your Church, for the gift of life and for the peace that resides when You are in charge.   Love Your son.

Daily Thoughts - Make God Known

Daily Thoughts - Make God Known

1226 From the very day of Pentecost the Church has celebrated and administered holy Baptism. Indeed St. Peter declares to the crowd astounded by his preaching: "Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins; and you shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit."26 The apostles and their collaborators offer Baptism to anyone who believed in Jesus: Jews, the God-fearing, pagans.27 Always, Baptism is seen as connected with faith: "Believe in the Lord Jesus, and you will be saved, you and your household," St. Paul declared to his jailer in Philippi. And the narrative continues, the jailer "was baptized at once, with all his family."

Authority.  Baptism is the beginning of understanding, the beginning of the acceptance of the teachings of the Church.  Saint Paul was part of his own church without the Holy Spirit, it wasn't until he was baptized in the Holy Spirit did he begin to honor God with his life.  He recognized the teachings of Jesus and how he was to obey His authority.

In our readings today, they speak of the deposit of faith and how it is handed down.  The instruction is given by the Holy Spirit and we are to listen and honor Him.  Apostolic succession is one of the gifts of the Church.  It is a continuation of the lineage of Jesus's family.  The gifts are handed on from generation to generation.  Peter was the first to be endowed with the gifts of the Church.  We have been given ears to hear and eyes to see, watch as God moves the hearts of the faithful.  Our heritage is written and we are given free will to follow.  Listen and discern the will of God.

Dear Father, it is a blessed morning, to sing praise to you at the holy sacrifice of the Mass.  To witness to the glory of You in the lives of the saints.  Thank You for the gift of Your successors that are given the blessings of Heaven that we may learn deeper of Your teachings.  Prayers for rain both natural rain and spiritual rain.  May we be a pleasing offering in Your sight.  Love Your son.

Daily Thoughts - Make God Known

Daily Thoughts - Make God Known

1225 In his Passover Christ opened to all men the fountain of Baptism. He had already spoken of his Passion, which he was about to suffer in Jerusalem, as a "Baptism" with which he had to be baptized.22 The blood and water that flowed from the pierced side of the crucified Jesus are types of Baptism and the Eucharist, the sacraments of new life.23 From then on, it is possible "to be born of water and the Spirit"24 in order to enter the Kingdom of God.

See where you are baptized, see where Baptism comes from, if not from the cross of Christ, from his death. There is the whole mystery: he died for you. In him you are redeemed, in him you are saved.25
Preparation.  "Jesus answered, "Amen, amen, I say to you, no one can enter the kingdom of God without being born of water and Spirit."  John‬ ‭3‬:‭5‬.  Water we can touch, taste and feel with our physical being, spirit we can not, it requires faith.  It can not be seen unless you have eyes of faith.  Jesus prepares us with both the physical and the spiritual in His birth, life, death and resurrection.  He made all things possible and fulfilled all seven Sacraments of the Church before He returned to the Father, beginning with Baptism and ending with Baptism.

Son of David, have mercy on me a sinner.   In todays first reading God readies His family lineage by doing what doesn't seem possible.  Naomi has a grandchild yet lost her sons before they had children.  God prepares the called.  In the Gospel reading He speaks of the turmoil within the Church, the people who seek stature and places of importance versus seeking to serve.  God prepares the called.  You are being called to prepare and it requires God like faith.  P.S.  God never fails

Dear Lord God, I see with faith, I feel with faith and I hear by faith.  When I read Your word it reveals our world around us, we see You at work within our own bible story in Acts chapter 29.  Awaken us to Your reality and continue the preparation as Your eternal plan is revealed.  May we be faithful to Your call.  Thank You Father for the gift of this day and the blessings that are being revealed.  Love Your son.

Daily Thoughts - Make God Known.

1224
Our Lord voluntarily submitted himself to the baptism of St. John, intended for sinners, in order to "fulfill all righteousness."19 Jesus' gesture is a manifestation of his self-emptying.20 The Spirit who had hovered over the waters of the first creation descended then on the Christ as a prelude of the new creation, and the Father revealed Jesus as his "beloved Son."21

Beloved son.  You are made in the image and likeness of God.  You have been given gifts and talents by God.  Have you emptied yourself and revealed your real identity, who you are and what you are called to?  Jesus came alive after His emptying, He awakened us to our true human nature, life without sin and His divine nature, life lived with God for God.  Have you entered into your baptism.

Naomi  walked away from her home land, only to find herself in a foreign land as a widow with no one to take care of her.  It was God that called her home, to come back and live within His graces.  Our baptism reveals God to us and God through us.  Listen to Him, He knows what the next step is.  The sinful man will just get lost but the man who listens to God and his true nature will live forever in the promised land.

Dear Father, we sit this morning with lots going on, it is You that drives me and it is You that I honor with this day.  I thank You for the time to sit and ponder, I thank You for what this day brings.  Father, as we walk together this day may my actions speak of You and what You can do.  Thank You Father for answering prayer for a beautiful couple, they needed a day with good news.  You amaze me.  Love Your son.

Christ's Baptism

1223 All the Old Covenant prefigurations find their fulfillment in Christ Jesus. He begins his public life after having himself baptized by St. John the Baptist in the Jordan.17 After his resurrection Christ gives this mission to his apostles: "Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you."18

Jesus entered the waters of the Jordan and came out a new man.  How can I say that?  We only begin to hear about the life of the Church and how we are to respond once He comes out of the water.  His baptism of water was the beginning of His ministry of being Teacher and His baptism of resurrection is His mission call to us.

""Come here. I will show you the bride, the wife of the Lamb."" ‭‭Revelation‬ ‭21‬:‭9‬b.  The life of the Church, are you watching its persecution wondering when God will return or are you living its mission by living out His mission.  Life has purpose and that purpose is to live for God, the glory of the Lord is to make Him known.  Jesus lived His life as the Son of Man proclaiming eternal salvation and loving His creation even in the pain of sin.

Keep God close and remember to bless yourself in the name of the Father, and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, Amen.  This simple sacramental rains down blessings from Heaven which helps us navigate our day.  It is a remembrance of our very own baptism into the Kingdom of God.

Dear Lord God, You bless us each day with breath, with joy and with hope when we keep You close.  I am thankful for the authority of Your Holy Church and the reminder of my baptism into it.  Help us see our actions and with Your help, make them holy actions that brings about what You desire.  Prayers for a special intention, I know You are at work.  Love Your son.

Daily Thoughts - Make God Known.

1222 Finally, Baptism is prefigured in the crossing of the Jordan River by which the People of God received the gift of the land promised to Abraham's descendants, an image of eternal life. The promise of this blessed inheritance is fulfilled in the New Covenant.

Enter in.  There is so much prefigured within scripture.  Have you entered in to your baptism?  Jesus was baptized then driven out into the desert by the Holy Spirit.  As we calm the mind and listen for God, there He was all the time just as He was there during our baptism as He anointed us with His grace.

He invites us to enter in to the vineyard which begins with our baptism.  The anointing of His Holy Spirit, to begin the day in prayer and be attentive to His small quiet whisper.  There are no cares other than serving Him, the pay is heavenly and the reward is eternity.  He cares not what age you come but that you come.  Listen to the heartbeat of the Master and that is reward enough.

Dear Father, I sit with You this morning and listen to the rhythm of life.  I feel the comfort of Your presence knowing that all is well even though the wind blows.  There is a joy in sitting with You that brings us back to the stillness of time and I am thankful for the gentle reminder of how powerful that day was when I entered into the life of Christ.  Teach Lord your servant is listening.  Now we are ready to enter into the  vineyard of life.  Love Your son.

Daily Thoughts - Make God Known. Memorial of the Queenship of Mary.

Daily Thoughts - Make God Known.  Memorial of the Queenship of Mary.

1221 But above all, the crossing of the Red Sea, literally the liberation of Israel from the slavery of Egypt, announces the liberation wrought by Baptism:

You freed the children of Abraham from the slavery of Pharaoh,
bringing them dry-shod through the waters of the Red Sea,
to be an image of the people set free in Baptism.16
Free.  We can learn a lot by what the Israelites did with their new found freedom.  Their story repeats itself over and over again and so does God's message of mercy.  With freedom comes responsibility to do the next right thing.  Learn the path they followed and you will understand your own, as well as see the way forward.  Baptism is only the beginning.

"The people who walked in darkness have seen a great light; Upon those who lived in a land of gloom a light has shone."  ‭‭Isaiah‬ ‭9‬:‭1‬.  The North Star shines brightly in a land surrounded.  Our readings today tell us to go, to bring the good news into the world.  To live out our baptism and new birth within the life of the Church.  As the Israelites followed the will of God they operated within His Divine grace, when they didn't they fell victim to the plunders of this world.  Their story is our story, with wisdom comes responsibility to do the next right thing.

Dear Father, we have been blessed with another day, each day builds upon the previous.  I am thankful we begin together and end together in a world that stands against truth.  The story has already been written, may we each see the vital role we each play within the life of the Church.  Prayers for this day and all it has to offer, may we do the next right thing.  Love Your son.

Daily Thoughts - Make God Known.

Daily Thoughts - Make God Known.

1220
If water springing up from the earth symbolizes life, the water of the sea is a symbol of death and so can represent the mystery of the cross. By this symbolism Baptism signifies communion with Christ's death.

Life and death.  Never really spent much time praying on the death of Christ within the Sacrament of Baptism.  The life is the natural tendency that we all want but death is something we try to avoid.  How do I reconcile this within my own life, it isn't easy but I also have a companion to help, Christ Himself.  With age comes understanding and compassion.  A new born is only beginning, the lessons He teaches are there in life and we will experience His death if we are to get to Heaven.

In our Gospel reading for today, Jesus shares the choice of death, the young man has experienced life and wants more.  Is he willing to enter into death to receive it?  That was the question Jesus asked of Him.  The good news is that Jesus is the teacher knowing how to reach the heart of the student.  He will not leave empty handed, until we learn to die to self.

Dear Father, it isn't an easy road that we walk upon, in this journey we must overcome self and the trappings of original sin.  Yet You stand by our side and give us direction until we learn that it is Your voice that brings about peace and harmony in our lives and not our own self-centered voice.  Prayers for a friend responding to Your call, may he experience the joys of life within You.  Love Your son.

Daily Thoughts - Make God Known

Daily Thoughts - Make God Known

1219 The Church has seen in Noah's ark a prefiguring of salvation by Baptism, for by it "a few, that is, eight persons, were saved through water":14

The waters of the great flood
you made a sign of the waters of Baptism,
that make an end of sin and a new beginning of goodness.15

"God said."  Look at the gift of Baptism that God gives us.  The joy of knowing you were made new again to begin again.  Being saved is a life long journey, not a single event but without the gift of Baptism we are not within the family of God.  Goodness rains in our hearts for God is good, it is He who assists us to navigate life through Baptism.

In todays readings, it is a reminder of history and how God saved the Israelites through the course of time.  We can learn from listening to our past and watching as God helped us navigate troubled waters.  It is the confidence in knowing that you were saved through your baptism.  The gift is an ongoing relationship with the Creator of the universe and choosing to serve Him in all that you do.  Child like faith helps us overcome our stoney hearts especially when it doesn't seem possible.  The mark of Baptism never leaves us and that mark is Jesus, let Him be the navigator, it is a much better journey.

Dear Father, history teaches us valuable lessons especially when we sit and see You in action.  Help us become more child like, trusting of all the goodness that is available to us through the grace of our baptism.   Our heritage is written upon our hearts and it is willingness to listen to Your Divine guidance that brings about our salvation.  You are all knowing, all powerful and all loving, may we serve You well.  Love your son.

Daily Thoughts - Make God Known.

Daily Thoughts - Make God Known.

1218 Since the beginning of the world, water, so humble and wonderful a creature, has been the source of life and fruitfulness. Sacred Scripture sees it as "overshadowed" by the Spirit of God:12

At the very dawn of creation
your Spirit breathed on the waters,
making them the wellspring of all holiness.13
Listen.  "and the earth was without form or shape, with darkness over the abyss and a mighty wind sweeping over the waters—"‭‭Genesis‬ ‭1‬:‭2‬.  Man's religion or God's religion?  We enter into Baptism through the inspired word of God written down.  The renewing of our spirit is just the beginning, the life giving water is only a taste of what God has in store for us.  Yet His word tells us it is His spirit that breathes life in us through Baptism.

As we listen to God we learn His mysteries and grow from the smallest seed to become what He has in store for us.  In todays readings the Israelites are going into the promised land, they cross into the land on dry ground as God gives us the keys to Heaven.  The Ark held back the flow of the river and the journey across the Jordan was an easy one.

Jesus explains to Peter what forgiveness looks like as he journeys towards the promised land.  These inspired words written within the Bible are our instruction to make it into the promised land.  Listening to another explain them is good but listening to God explain them is the direct source.  He gives us His Church, His spirit and free will.  What you do with it is your choice.

Dear Father, beginning the day with the Ark of the Covenant is a good beginning.  She teaches what she has been taught that opens up scripture to help me understand.  The mornings are only the beginning of the day, may it end as it began, with peace and Your Holy Spirit.  Prayers for a friend learning to listen.  Love Your son.

II. BAPTISM IN THE ECONOMY OF SALVATION

Prefigurations of Baptism in the Old Covenant

1217 In the liturgy of the Easter Vigil, during the blessing of the baptismal water, the Church solemnly commemorates the great events in salvation history that already prefigured the mystery of Baptism:

Father, you give us grace through sacramental signs,
which tell us of the wonders of your unseen power.

In Baptism we use your gift of water,
which you have made a rich symbol
of the grace you give us in this sacrament.11

Signs and wonders.  The power of God within the Sacrament of Baptism, do we underestimate His ability to bring about what He began?  In the Catholic Church we celebrate this mystery every year in the Easter Vigil to prepare the Church for the new year of His mercy by blessing the baptismal water.  God prepares us for what is to come.

Moses was prepared for what was to come in His life, he became an instrument for God by performing what was asked of him.  He demonstrated the power of God with the exodus of the Israelites.   Never underestimate what God can do.  The sacrament has the power of God within it, we must cooperate with Him if we are to experience God.  He is all knowing, all powerful, all love, is He all to you?  Our faith will demonstrate His power.

Dear Father, we live in a broken world that has denied Your power even though there are signs of Your ability before our eyes.  Help us see Your power in our own lives, allow us to see the power of the baptismal sacrament.  Prayers of thanksgiving of what You are doing and the grace that is being shared in our daily lives.  Thank You for another day to go into the battle field with You on the inside.  Love Your son.

Daily Thoughts - Make God Known. The Feast of the Assumption of Mary.

Daily Thoughts - Make God Known.    The Feast of the Assumption of Mary.

1216 "This bath is called enlightenment, because those who receive this [catechetical] instruction are enlightened in their understanding . . . ."8 Having received in Baptism the Word, "the true light that enlightens every man," the person baptized has been "enlightened," he becomes a "son of light," indeed, he becomes "light" himself:9

Baptism is God's most beautiful and magnificent gift. . . .We call it gift, grace, anointing, enlightenment, garment of immortality, bath of rebirth, seal, and most precious gift. It is called gift because it is conferred on those who bring nothing of their own; grace since it is given even to the guilty; Baptism because sin is buried in the water; anointing for it is priestly and royal as are those who are anointed; enlightenment because it radiates light; clothing since it veils our shame; bath because it washes; and seal as it is our guard and the sign of God's Lordship.10

"A great sign appeared in the sky, a woman clothed with the sun, with the moon under her feet, and on her head a crown of twelve stars. She was with child and wailed aloud in pain as she labored to give birth."  ‭‭Revelation‬ ‭12‬:‭1‬-‭2‬

"A son of light" or "a daughter of light", it is God that radiates thru us and brings about understanding.  We are no longer standing by ourselves but we have entered into God's holy family.  Born into His Kingdom here on earth thru Baptism. Baptism is so much more than what we think we comprehend.

If we are a son or daughter then it stands to reason we have a mother as well as a Father, it is the natural order of things.  God does not operate in disorder.

Mother, Father and Son work together to bring about the Kingdom of God here on earth within our hearts.  The labor pains are real, we see the groaning, more so today than in any other time in our lives.  Celebrate God's Divine plan of uniting His Holy Family which includes you.

Dear Father, I celebrate with You this day of holy obligation on the feast of the Assumption of our Blessed Mother.  As part of Your family, I am aware of the labor pains, I see the dragon.  You are mightier than all our unbelief and deceptions of this world.  I am thankful for Your divine plan.  On this day, may we celebrate Your gift of grace thru the Mother of our Lord.  Prayers for a world gone astray.  Love Your son.

Daily Thoughts - Make God Known.

Daily Thoughts - Make God Known.

1215 This sacrament is also called "the washing of regeneration and renewal by the Holy Spirit," for it signifies and actually brings about the birth of water and the Spirit without which no one "can enter the kingdom of God."7

Think!  I watch the natural curiosity of a child to continue to learn and grow, to know its world around them.  It isn't something that they really think about, it is built in.   The renewal of Baptism works the same way, it is a never ending journey to fulfill the desire to know God.  We look at it as an event in time but in reality it is a new birth into God's Kingdom.  One must become child like to get into Heaven.  Matthew 18:3

Moses gives us instruction in today's first reading, these instructions are for own good, to help us navigate this world that will lead us to Heaven.  Once one sits with the Holy Spirit and He illuminates your mind, there is this child like curiosity to continue to learn more.  There is so much more within the daily readings than meets the eye.  Each day we spend deliberate time with God, He builds upon the previous day.  They do not call Him Teacher for nothing.  The question is are you a good student?

Dear Father God, there is this natural curiosity to listen and learn from You.  You give the lesson each day and then we begin to apply it to our day.  Just like a child that learns a new skill or talent, they want to share it with others.   I thank You for the curiosity of a child in learning from You, each day brings about a new adventure.  Love Your son.
