Daily Thoughts - Make God Known
I. WHAT IS THIS SACRAMENT CALLED?
1214 This sacrament is called Baptism, after the central rite by which it is carried out: to baptize (Greek baptizein) means to "plunge" or "immerse"; the "plunge" into the water symbolizes the catechumen's burial into Christ's death, from which he rises up by resurrection with him, as "a new creature."6
New life! Are you immersed in the life of Christ? We enter into the life of the Church thru Baptism, it is a cooperation with God that we begin to become more and more like Jesus. The Baptism is the beginning, just like the birth of a new baby, it is nurtured and learns how to navigate life. Being Baptized marks us as belonging to Christ, it doesn't supersede our free will and force us forward, it is our willingness to listen to God and act upon what He gives us.
Peter asked to come out onto the water in todays Gospel reading. He had courage to take the next step, he asked. The rough seas(challenges of life) and the wind(noises from our culture) did not interfere with him walking on water until he looked around and began to doubt. Yet Jesus, looking after one of His own, took the next step. He pulled him up and rescued him from the environment he was in. When we listen to God and heed His voice, all is well.
"At once [Jesus] spoke to them, "Take courage, it is I; do not be afraid." Peter said to him in reply, "Lord, if it is you, command me to come to you on the water." He said, "Come" Matthew 14:27-29a
Dear Father, I sit and listen for the whisper, the joy that comes with listening to the stillness and hearing You speak above the culture, helping us know that You are greater than all the things that bring about fear. Renew our strength Lord so we may walk on water following You into the deep. Prayers for a Baptism of the Holy Spirit to awaken hearts that will bring about new life within an earthly culture of death, in Jesus name. Love Your son.
