THE SACRAMENT OF BAPTISM
1213 Holy Baptism is the basis of the whole Christian life, the gateway to life in the Spirit (vitae spiritualis ianua),4 and the door which gives access to the other sacraments. Through Baptism we are freed from sin and reborn as sons of God; we become members of Christ, are incorporated into the Church and made sharers in her mission: "Baptism is the sacrament of regeneration through water in the word."5
Reborn. Entering into the life of Jesus thru His word and His Church. It is a mystery that requires our faith, not our logic. Whether one is old or a new baby, we are introduced to the life of Christ thru this sacrament. Marius Victorinus (280 AD - ?) an early Church father states:
"Every mystery which is enacted by our Lord Jesus Christ asks only for faith."
It begins with faith whether that is our very own faith because we were not baptized as a child or the faith of our parents. We are being given back to God as an offering claiming that the child or ourselves are not our own property, our earthly nature does not belong to us but it belongs to God. Faith begins when we trust not in self but in God.
"Hear, O Israel! The Lord is our God, the Lord alone! Therefore, you shall love the Lord, your God, with your whole heart, and with your whole being, and with your whole strength. Take to heart these words which I command you today. Keep repeating them to your children. Recite them when you are at home and when you are away, when you lie down and when you get up. Bind them on your arm as a sign and let them be as a pendant on your forehead. Write them on the doorposts of your houses and on your gates." Deuteronomy 6:4-9. Who do you belong to? If it is self without God even though you may have been baptizied you are not allowing God to work within. The Sacrament of Baptism is a mystery that we must enter into with our hearts not our minds. Our actions will convey what our heart is saying, not the words that we repeat. Open up the mystery of rebirth thru the Church, the one Jesus gives us.
Dear Father, there is much going on as You well know. May the distractions of the day not get in the way of the love we have for You. Show us where we need to grow, help us see how our own Baptism is what gives life to our spirit. Thank You Father for another day to sit with You, I see the glory that You are accomplishing thru others who are being faithful to their Baptismal calling. Love Your son.
